A Personal Perspective
on What Am I Hungry For? |
|
On the page titled, Adjusting Our Eating-Habits, We suggested a process to find out what you are really hungry for. If you haven't yet read that section, we suggest that you do so before reading this page. *** *** *** Whenever the impulse to reach for food entered my mind, I asked myself these questions: "Is my stomach saying Give me food? or is there some other motive that is more subtle and more compelling. Is my stomach speaking or is it my tongue? Or is it something completely different -- something completely unrelated to food? Will eating this food satisfy my hunger?" The act of eating is pleasurable, but how will I feel thirty minutes from now? What am I really hungry for? When I asked myself this question: "What am I really hungry for?" here are the processes I went through and the responses: First, I stopped whatever I was doing, picked up something sensual to occupy and distract my hands, sat down in a comfortable place, and closed my eyes. (Yes, I know there are times and situations where you cannot do that.) I next focused my attention on my body. When I noticed muscle tension, I intentionally allowed my body to relax. (Relaxing is not something you do. It's something you can only allow) I then focused on my stomach. I paid attention to what it was telling me? If there was a genuine hunger, I sought out reasonably-healthy food and satisfied that hunger. (See the page titled: Adjusting Our Eating-Habits.) If my stomach was telling
me that it was not requesting food, I asked
the Question: "What am I really
hungry for?" and then sat
quietly listening, looking, and feeling for
a response. As an aid to finding

Side of Reality.
I was not quick to get answers, however with patience, I began to have feelings which I later translated into words. The feeling (translated into words) said "Contentment, Peace of Mind. Physical Safety, Financial Security, Love, Sexual Fulfillment, A Sense of Belonging. With the exception of physical safety, these were all very general word -- words that are inner states of being --words that are not actions or goals that are tangible, and doable with measurable results. Next, I asked for more clarity. Who do I choose to be in my present context (my present situation)? Because life is a daily journey of discovery and not a destination, my first task was to be here and now, and accepting of what is. Instead of complaining or fighting what is, I chose to use here and now as my launching pad to my chosen "there then." Before I can reach my goal, I next began to re-define my future to fulfill my desires. I asked myself, "What do I choose to be, do, have, express, and/or experience? More specific answers soon came into my mind. Where Do I choose to Live? I choose to live in a rural community somewhere between San Francisco and Oregon. What are my real
career goals? My goal
is to manifest the programs I have designed
and that are listed on the TLC-Life-Center
Website How can I improve my relationships? My goal is to stay in the context of and express unconditional love no matter what happens. Next I asked, how do I get from my here now situation into living the goals that came I desire to experience. What small step can I take today that will move me closer to my goal. I began taking these steps.
Remember to make changes slowly enough that you
handle the changes. We recommend
using the Kaizen approach for taking one
small step at a time.
Be Patient: Don't expect miracles, until you've learned the basics. The evidence tells us that it takes about three weeks to change an ingrained habit. Also, we recommend using the old Russian Communism approach: No matter what happens, declare victory and move on. When you find yourself back in your old behavior patterns, simply declare victory for waking up, and move on.
